What's Legal, What's Safe for Renters
Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) does not penetrate paint or drywall. When removed correctly, it leaves no residue and no surface damage — legally classified as a reversible modification in all US states. The one thing that will damage your wall: installing tiles on a damp surface. Moisture trapped between adhesive and paint causes bubbling when removed. Ensure the wall is dry for 48 hours before installation.
Splash Zone vs. Submerged Wet Zone
Splash Zone (upper shower walls, behind sink, occasional water contact): standard peel-and-stick tiles are fully appropriate here.
Submerged Wet Zone (direct showerhead spray, continuous water flow): standard tiles require full silicone edge sealing for this zone. In most rental bathrooms, a shower curtain or glass door handles this area — tiles go on the walls above and beside the spray zone.
The 24–48 hour rule: No water contact for 24 hours after installation. Normal shower use after 48 hours.

Hair dryer method: Medium heat, 2–3 inches from tile, 30 seconds per tile. Result on Eggshell drywall: zero residue, zero paint damage.
45-degree slow peel: Pull at 45° at approximately 1 inch per second. Do not rush.
